English
Introduction
English, like any language, is simply a way to express and communicate thought. Like any literature course, the study of literature is the study of well-expressed thought, whether in a dramatic, poetic, journalistic or prosaic format. What does it mean to learn how to study thought? To study the best expressed documentations of thought in English-language history and hone your own skills of critical analysis?.in everyday life, sparking curiosity and critical thinking from an early stage.
In today’s world, your voice, internal and external, matters. We’re surrounded by information. Articles, videos, AI-generated content. Some of it’s brilliant. Some of it’s mediocre. Some of it’s fake. English teaches you discernment. You learn to read between the lines, ask important questions, and empower yourself to disagree with asserted ideas. That’s a life skill, not just an exam one.
English also lets you explore art. Through poems, novels, essays, and plays, you begin to see how writers shape the world, or create a whole world, through language. You learn to think about style and preoccupations; what makes a writer tick, what they’re obsessed with, how they try to move or shock or comfort a reader. You start noticing what people do with language, how every person in the world uses language to create stories and worlds, not just artists.
Then there's self-expression. English gives you space to say what you really think. To try out ideas, take risks, and write in your own voice. It is always difficult, but it is a skill that will be useful in every single context in life. The more you write and reflect, the more you understand about yourself — your opinions, your biases, your fears, your strengths, your point of view. It’s a subject that demands growth, and rewards it.
The course also includes Shakespeare and prescribed poetry. These works still matter, not because they’re “important” in a canonical way, but because reading them connects you to a cultural conversation on some of life’s largest questions that’s been going on for centuries. You don’t have to agree with everything - anything even. You just have to consider what you think, what you are interested in and keep asking why.
