Introduction

Mandarin Chinese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and offers students access to a rich culture, a deep history, and valuable global opportunities.

Mandarin has been included in the Irish secondary school curriculum as part of the Leaving Certificate language options. Whether students are new to the language or already have some background, the curriculum is designed to develop communicative skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Key areas of study include pronunciation (Pinyin), character recognition and writing, vocabulary for everyday life, sentence structures, and cultural topics such as festivals, customs, and values.

The Leaving Cert Mandarin Chinese exam is composed of both written and oral components. The exam caters to both beginners and heritage speakers, with appropriate differentiation to reflect language exposure.
