Science

Introduction

Science at the Junior Cycle level introduces students to the wonder and relevance of science in everyday life, sparking curiosity and critical thinking from an early stage.

The Irish Junior Cycle Science curriculum is broad and engaging, covering topics across biology, chemistry, physics, and earth and space science. Students explore how scientific ideas are developed and applied through hands-on investigations, observations, and problem-solving tasks. They study topics like cells and systems, energy, materials, forces, reactions, and the Earth's place in the universe.

Junior Cycle Science aims to build a solid foundation in scientific literacy, inquiry, and reasoning. Students learn to ask meaningful questions, carry out fair tests, interpret data, and communicate their findings effectively — all essential skills for future study and lifelong learning.

Assessment includes classroom-based assessments (CBAs), a science project, and a final written exam. The CBAs focus on students' experimental design and ability to communicate scientific ideas clearly. This balanced approach prepares students well for choosing specific science subjects at Senior Cycle.

Recommended subject combinations after Junior Cycle:

Based on interest, students may continue with Biology, Chemistry, or Physics.

Our team provides ongoing support to help students discover their scientific strengths and explore their potential through guided subject choices.
