Biology

Introduction

Leaving Certificate Biology is the scientific study of life. It helps students understand living systems, from cells and genes to organisms, ecosystems and the interaction between biology, society and technology.

Students develop biological knowledge, but they also learn how biologists think: asking questions, handling evidence, analysing data, and using scientific ideas to explain what happens in the natural world. It is a strong subject for students interested in medicine, health, science, environment, agriculture and biotechnology.

Current marking structure and 2027 onwards

Current marking structure

For the syllabus examined up to June 2026, Biology is assessed through a terminal examination paper. The current syllabus document states that practical work is integral to the subject, but the assessment is through the written paper.

2027 onwards

From the new specification introduced to fifth-year students in September 2025, the assessment for the first 2027 cohort changes to two components: a Biology in Practice Investigation worth 40% and a written examination worth 60%.
