Leaving Certificate History is currently assessed at Ordinary and Higher level through two components: a report on the research study worth 20% and a terminal written examination worth 80%.
Leaving Certificate History is about investigating the human past through evidence, interpretation and argument. Students learn how historians ask questions, evaluate sources, compare viewpoints and build reasoned explanations.
It is a subject for students who want to think critically and write clearly. Alongside topic knowledge, students develop research skills, judgement and the ability to support conclusions with relevant historical evidence.

Curriculum Online states that a draft Leaving Certificate History specification was approved for public consultation from March 2, 2026 to May 24, 2026. As of May 24, 2026, no confirmed replacement specification or new 2027 marking structure has been published.
