Chemistry

Introduction

Leaving Certificate Chemistry studies matter, its structure, its behaviour and its interactions. Students learn how chemists explain change, test ideas experimentally and apply chemical understanding to health, sustainability, technology and everyday life.

The subject combines theory, practical work and analysis. Students are expected to think like scientists, use models carefully, interpret evidence and communicate explanations clearly as well as carrying out calculations accurately.

Current marking structure and 2027 onwards

Current marking structure

For the current syllabus, which remains the examination route to June 2026, Chemistry is assessed through a terminal written examination. The 40% Chemistry in Practice Investigation and 60% written examination structure applies to the new specification cohort instead.

2027 onwards

The first examination cohort under this specification is the 2027 cohort. As of May 24, 2026, no further post-2027 assessment revision is officially confirmed beyond the published 40% investigation and 60% written examination structure.
