Introduction
Leaving Certificate Physics explores how the physical world works, from motion and energy to waves, electricity and modern physics. Students use models, equations, experiments and evidence to explain natural phenomena and technological applications.
The subject combines conceptual understanding, practical investigation and mathematical problem-solving. Students learn to reason carefully, use data well and communicate physical ideas clearly.
Current marking structure and 2027 onwards
Current marking structure
For the current syllabus, which remains the examination route to June 2026, Physics is assessed through a terminal written examination. The 40% Physics In Practice Investigation and 60% written examination structure applies to the new specification cohort instead.
2027 onwards
The first examination cohort under this specification is the 2027 cohort. As of May 24, 2026, no further post-2027 assessment revision is officially confirmed beyond the published 40% investigation and 60% written examination structure.
