Business

Introduction

Leaving Certificate Business helps students understand how business works, how decisions are made, and how enterprise affects people, communities and the wider economy. It develops business literacy, financial awareness and the ability to apply ideas to real commercial situations.

Students do more than learn definitions. They are expected to investigate business issues, analyse evidence, evaluate choices and communicate informed conclusions about enterprise, leadership, markets and the business environment.

Current marking structure and 2027 onwards

Current marking structure

For the current syllabus, which remains the examination route to June 2026, Business is assessed through a terminal written examination. The 40% Business Alive Investigative Study and 60% written examination structure applies to the new specification cohort instead.

2027 onwards

The first examination cohort for this specification is the 2027 Leaving Certificate cohort. As of May 24, 2026, no additional post-2027 assessment change is officially confirmed beyond the 40% Investigative Study and 60% written examination structure already published.
