Introduction

Leaving Certificate Spanish develops students' ability to communicate in Spanish and to understand the relationship between language and culture. Students build confidence across speaking, listening, reading and writing while strengthening vocabulary, grammar and cultural awareness.

It is a practical language subject that rewards consistent active use. Students learn to communicate clearly, understand authentic material and express ideas with increasing accuracy and independence.

Current marking structure and 2027 onwards

Current marking structure

Under the current common modern-language syllabus framework, Higher Level assessment is Speaking 25%, Listening comprehension 20%, Reading comprehension 30%, and Writing 25%. Ordinary Level assessment is Speaking 20%, Listening comprehension 25%, Reading comprehension 40%, and Writing 15%.

2027 onwards

No new Leaving Certificate Spanish specification or confirmed 2027 assessment change is currently published on Curriculum Online. As of May 24, 2026, the current syllabus framework remains the official course.
