Introduction

Leaving Certificate German develops students' ability to communicate in German and to understand how language and culture connect. Students work across speaking, listening, reading and writing while also building language awareness and cultural awareness.

It is a practical subject that rewards regular active use of the language. Students develop confidence through topic-based communication, accurate grammar, vocabulary building and informed engagement with German-speaking cultures.

Current marking structure and 2027 onwards

Current marking structure

Under the current common modern-language syllabus framework, Higher Level assessment is Speaking 25%, Listening comprehension 20%, Reading comprehension 30%, and Writing 25%. Ordinary Level assessment is Speaking 20%, Listening comprehension 25%, Reading comprehension 40%, and Writing 15%.

2027 onwards

No new Leaving Certificate German specification or confirmed 2027 assessment change is currently published on Curriculum Online. As of May 24, 2026, the current syllabus framework remains the official course.
